BlephEx represents a significant advancement in blepharitis treatment, offering targeted relief for patients who haven’t found success with traditional at-home remedies like warm compresses and lid scrubs. This FDA-cleared technology provides a thorough, professional-grade cleaning that reaches areas conventional treatments cannot, addressing the bacterial biofilms and debris that contribute to chronic eyelid inflammation.

Our warm, welcoming environment—consistently praised by patients as making them “feel like family”—ensures that your BlephEx treatment experience is comfortable and stress-free.
If you’re struggling with persistent blepharitis symptoms, red and irritated eyelids, or chronic dry eye issues, BlephEx may be the solution you’ve been seeking. Our team is ready to evaluate your condition and determine if this advanced treatment is right for you.
Our eyes are extremely delicate, yet they can be subjected to harsh conditions and other environmental factors that affect their health. One of the problems that can affect our eyes is an accumulation of dirt, debris, and bacteria on the eyelids. This can cause a range of issues, including stopping tear film from reaching the eyes and being properly dispersed over their surface, which is necessary to keep them healthy and comfortable. Fortunately, a new solution called BlephexÔ can help.
What is BlephexÔ?
BlephexÔ is a handheld electro-mechanical device that is applied to the margins of the eyelids to clean them and improve the effectiveness with which tear film flows onto the surface of the eyes.
BlephexÔ has a disposable, surgical-grade sponge tip that rapidly oscillates to create a cleaning action. Before the sponge tip is placed onto the eyes, it is soaked in a gentle exfoliating solution. This solution provides soft abrasion to help remove dead skin cells and debris that could be irritating the eyes and interrupting tear film progression. The BlephexÔ device is manually applied to the eyes and moved gently across the eyelids, with the entire, painless process taking approximately 6 to 8 minutes per eye. A different sponge is used on each eye, ensuring that no bacteria are passed between them. After the procedure, patients are given instructions on how to maintain the cleanliness of their eyelids with daily/nightly eyelid hygiene at home.
Most patients experience a significant improvement in tear film production and dispersal, and a reduction in unpleasant symptoms that they may have been experiencing within 48 hours of their treatment. While a single treatment is normally enough to produce excellent results, many patients are advised to have BlephexÔ every 4-6 months.
What conditions can BlephexÔ help with?
BlephexÔ can be used to clean the eyelids at any time, and people who suffer from dry eyes or eye allergies may find it is particularly beneficial for helping to reduce the symptoms that they experience. It can also be combined with Lipiflow – another technological solution – to help counteract the effects of dry eyes.
Unsurprisingly, BlephexÔ is particularly recommended as a treatment for an eye condition called blepharitis. Blepharitis is characterized by the inflammation of the eyelids, which causes them to become red, swollen, and itchy. Although the condition is not usually serious, it can lead to further problems if it isn’t treated.
Symptoms of blepharitis include:
- Sore eyes
- Itchy eyes
- A gritty, irritated feeling affecting the eyes
- Redness
- Flakes or crustiness around the roots of the eyelashes
- Eyelids that stick together when you wake up in the morning
What to Expect During a BlephEx Procedure
At Frame & Focus Eye Care, we believe in removing the “medical mystery” from your visit. A BlephEx treatment is a straightforward, in-office procedure that typically takes less than 15 minutes. Here is how we ensure your comfort:
-
Preparation: We begin by applying numbing drops to your eyes to ensure the process is entirely painless. You’ll be comfortably seated in a standard exam chair, just like during a comprehensive eye exam.
-
The Cleaning Process: Dr. Zaver uses a medical-grade, handheld device equipped with a tiny, oscillating surgical sponge. Think of it like a “professional dental cleaning, but for your eyelids.” This sponge, soaked in a gentle exfoliating solution, carefully removes the biofilm, crusting, and bacterial buildup along your lid margins.
-
Precision and Safety: We use a fresh, sterile tip for each eye to prevent any cross-contamination. Most patients describe the sensation as a light tickling or vibrating feeling.
-
Immediate Cleanliness: Once the procedure is complete—usually in about 6 to 8 minutes per eye—your eyelids are thoroughly rinsed. You will leave the office with eyelids that feel lighter and cleaner than they have in years.
How Effective Is BlephEx for Blepharitis and Dry Eye?
While traditional at-home treatments like warm compresses are helpful, they often can’t penetrate the stubborn bacterial “scab” (biofilm) that forms over the oil glands. BlephEx is a game-changer because it addresses the root cause of dry eye syndrome:
-
Deep Debridement: By physically removing the inflammatory debris, BlephEx allows your Meibomian glands to function properly again, which is essential for healthy, lubricating tears.
-
Rapid Symptom Relief: Many of our Richmond patients report a significant reduction in grittiness, redness, and itching within just 24 to 48 hours of their first treatment.
-
Preventative Health: Beyond just fixing current irritation, regular BlephEx treatments (typically every 4–6 months) help prevent long-term damage to the tear glands, protecting your vision as you age.
-
Synergy with Other Treatments: For patients with more severe dry eye issues, we often recommend BlephEx as a “primer” to make other advanced therapies, like LipiFlow, even more effective.
BlephEx Recovery and Aftercare
One of the best features of BlephEx at Frame & Focus Eye Care is that there is zero downtime. You can return to your normal daily activities, including driving and working, immediately after leaving our office.
-
Immediate Post-Care: You may experience slight redness for an hour or two, but this quickly fades. Your eyes will likely feel refreshed and “cool” immediately after the procedure.
-
Maintaining Results: To keep the biofilm from returning too quickly, our team—including Liz or Jose—will provide you with a simple home-care kit. This usually includes specific lid wipes or a foaming cleanser to use nightly.
-
The “Clean Slate” Advantage: Think of BlephEx as a professional reset. Your home hygiene routine will be much more effective now that the years of buildup have been professionally removed.
-
Follow-Up: We typically schedule a follow-up or a recurring “maintenance” cleaning every few months, depending on the severity of your blepharitis, to ensure your symptoms stay away for good.
