What is Lipiflow?
Lipiflow is a new technological solution that addresses the underlying cause of your dry eyes, rather than simply treating the symptoms. It is most effective at helping patients whose dry eyes are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction – a condition characterized by problems with the way that the meibomian glands produce the oil that forms an essential part of our tear film. The meibomian glands can become less productive, or in some cases, even blocked by hardened oil deposits. This prevents the oil from reaching your tear film, making it less effective. Lipiflow targets the meibomian glands, warming them to break down oily blockages and massaging your eyes to make sure that the oil, and then the tear film, is evenly dispersed. This helps to combat the symptoms associated with dry eyes, which can include:
- Eye fatigue
- Dry, scratchy, and uncomfortable eyes
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses
Your eye doctor will be able to advise you if Lipiflow has the potential to be a suitable solution for your dry eyes.
How LipiFlow Works to Treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
At Frame & Focus Eye Care, we use LipiFlow to target the root cause of dryness rather than just masking symptoms with drops. Most dry eye cases are caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), a condition where the oil-producing glands in your eyelids become blocked or unproductive. Without this essential oil, your tear film evaporates too quickly, leaving your eyes feeling like the “Sahara Desert”.
The LipiFlow system uses a specialized applicator to deliver Vectored Thermal Pulsation technology. It applies controlled heat to the inner eyelids to liquefy hardened oils (meibum) while simultaneously providing a gentle, pulsating massage to the outer lids to clear the blockages. This process restores the natural flow of oils into your tear film, providing the long-lasting lubrication your eyes need for comprehensive ocular health.
How Long Do LipiFlow Results Last?
Our goal is for you to leave our office feeling confident in the future of your eye health. While every patient’s unique visual demands are different, LipiFlow is designed to provide sustained relief.
-
Initial Improvement: Most patients begin to notice a decrease in scratchiness, blurred vision, and light sensitivity within three days.
-
Peak Results: Optimal lubrication and comfort are usually achieved between 6 to 8 weeks post-treatment as the glands resume normal oil production.
-
Long-Term Relief: For many, a single LipiFlow session can provide significant relief for 12 to 18 months.
-
Proactive Care: Because MGD can be a chronic condition, Dr. Zaver will work with you to manage your ocular health proactively and maintain your results over time.

What to Expect During a LipiFlow Procedure
True to our patient-centered approach, we ensure your LipiFlow experience is relaxing and stress-free. The procedure is a non-invasive, in-office treatment that typically follows these steps:
-
Preparation: You will be comfortably seated in a treatment chair; no anesthetic is required as the process is painless.
-
Placement: Dr. Sarah Zaver or a member of our frequently praised team will carefully place sterile, single-use activators over your eyes.
-
The Treatment: The device warms the inner eyelids to approximately 42.5°C while applying gentle pressure to the outer surfaces.
-
Duration: The procedure takes about 12 minutes per eye, during which time you can simply relax or listen to music.
